Antique Moroccan Berber Prayer or Trade (used for both) Bead Necklace from the estate of Arthur Court, renowned California Designer, Mineral enthusiastic, and adventurer. Strung in Morocco, Africa in early 20th century for the African Trade Industry. These are genuine Antique African Copal Amber Beads and were used in trade and ceremony. This necklace is quite large at 985 grams and is strung with 25 huge graduating beads.
The largest bead is 54 mm at the widest point and the smallest bead is 32mm at the narrowest point. Each bead is handcrafted from pieces that are butterscotch, orange, honey, and egg yolk. Beads range from semi transparent to opaque, with pieces showing beautiful Swirls in Inclusions. These these beads fluoresce beautifully in UV light. Lite surface crazing can be seen on some pieces, a natural occurrence that happens over time.
Some beads have traditional Moroccan metal braces made from German Silver used for repair of beads of this age and importance. It is very strong and in excellent condition for being over 120 years old, and is quite comfortable. Arthur Court began collecting while serving in the Navy in World War II, allowing him to experience vast amounts of cultures around the world in his journeys. His collections became so large, he was introduced to an export agent to help him send Treasures home.Settling in San Francisco, his collections grew as did his love for minerals fossils and seashells, and their various forms. He drew inspiration from African Flora and Fauna, which led him to the large continent to observe the species in their natural habitat, and to of course grow his collection. Arthur brought this necklace home from one of his many Journeys to Africa. Arthur Court passed away in 2015 and this necklace was part of his estate which was acquired by my business associates from San Francisco, directly from Arthur's Family.
