This is an estate collection piece with crossover interest for collectors of Art Deco, Faturan, Bakelite, Trade Beads, Phenolics, and prayer beads! The first two photos are in 1 Direct sun 2 Shade, both natural sun- the photo taken on the carpet is indoor lighting.
Initially, these prayer beads were listed individually and in their small groups of two or three, but I decided to keep the collection together and have them strung together so that they stay together. They are all pre-1940 beads, when Faturan beads stopped being made. One of my favorite aspects of trade and trade beads is the sharing of trends across continents.I'm aware that a lot of these older phenolics are German - to me this necklace has a distinctively autumnal Art Deco color palette of German Bakelite. It inevitably has African and Middle Eastern beads.
This necklace makes its way through all of the shades of natural amber- Egg Yolk, butterscotch, cherry. These are not natural amber - to be perfectly clear. Amber prayer beads are the most sought after, it is historically interesting that this is why these beads are in the amber color palette. They're certainly much more durable.
In my length photo the necklace is rounded, when linear it is 20. I Simichrome tested all of he beads except for duplicates - for example the mirror image red beads, oblong beads, etc.I tested one of each, and they all come back with a Bakelite-positive amber yellow - EXCEPT FOR the two round red Faturan ball-beads, which has a red timge. All else comes back yellow. There are three tiny natural Baltic amber beads near the 925 Sterling vintage toggle clasp (tarnished silver, could be polished if you are interested). Damage: the yellow beads all show signs of wear (even dirtiness) between one another where one bead meets the next, red beads are shiny and bright with no "between" wear. There's also a great mix of shiny and matte, opaque and transparent. A very natural color palette of fun. Please check my other listings.
I hope to get everything pictured in the mass-grouping listed, culminating with the vase. Highlights: a 49mm long tubular Faturan Trade Bead (accompanied by other beads on necklace), a great cherry amber Komboloi, and a 960 gram hand carved vase that Simichrome tests as Bakelite Faturan is a Phenolic and sometimes test as Bakelite, and sometimes not - many genuine pieces do not test positive - including many of the wonderful pieces in this incredible collection. It's about 50/50 as many were created with other phenolic substances.I gladly respond to any special requests most.. do you want three close-up photos of the bead home? Send me a message - I happily answer any of these types of questions and enjoy talking about these pieces.
